The reported incidence of phobic behavior is at least four times greater for women than it is for men. Some estimates suggest there are ten times as many phobic women as phobic men. Yet no one has ever been able to offer a satisfactory explanation for this.

Of course many people, both professional and nonprofessional, have tried to explain these puzzling statistics. Some suggest that “women are more emotional than men,” that “women think too much,” or that “women have nothing better to do all day than worry.” Others suggest that men are less willing to admit they have a problem and that these “closet phobics” are biasing the statistics.

MPOD=MySpace and IPod.   If you are part of this generation, then you have never known life without cell-phones, or personal computers. You have grown up with online-socializing, chatting with a community of friends that probably has a larger population than the town in which you reside.  You live on instant messages and wireless technology.  And yet, as a member of this techno-savvy generation you may be experiencing stress levels higher than previous generations.  You are one of over 30 million teenagers, ages 12-20 years.  You see your future to include serious issues such as war, terrorism and a faltering economy.  The US has the highest rates of teen pregnancy and births in the western industrialized world.  Obesity is quickly becoming an epidemic among our youth, increasing the problems of self-esteem and anger management, not to mention the increases in health issues including type 2 diabetes, depression, and increases chances of heart disease.

And here you are as a teenager, juggling many roles on a daily basis.  Do you have the scheduling demands of fitting in a part time job?  Are you a member of a varsity sport–with practices and more practices?  Maybe you are studying for the SAT’s.  Have you thought about what college is right for you?  How will you pay for college?  What about that term paper due next week?  Do you have a date for the prom?  Is your best friend mad at you?  What did you say? Little or big worries all add up to anxiety.  Some people can be habitual worriers, while some could have had an experience that makes them feel anxious.  Some individuals end up having a social phobia, or become panic-stricken.  Others can be sad for a prolonged spell of time that makes them very depressed.  Effexor is one of the medicines used for treating depression and anxiety in people above 18 years in age.

An imbalance of serotonin and norepinephrine – neurotransmitters used by the brain to send and receive messages – is believed to be the cause of various mental disorders in people.  Normally, these chemicals function smoothly, but when less of these are available due to a reuptake by the parent nerve, it can lead to disorders such as depression and anxiety.  Effexor or Venlafaxine blocks this reuptake, which helps the brain to function normally.  This medicine is used for treating depression, as well as anxiety and related disorders.

These is Why Managing Stress is so Difficult

Managing stress has proved very difficult and this is the story across the vast majority of society. Before looking at the difficulties of managing stress, it will be vital to know what exactly stress is and how it comes about. Lazarus in his model of stress put it very clearly and described stress as the situation that occurs when your resources seem to have been depleted by the outside demand until you feel you have nothing to offer. Stress is one of those things that is best experienced so that you can know exactly what it feels like. You will always have stressful situations as long as you are alive and therefore, everyone has an idea of what stress is all about. Stressors are causes of stress and they can be external or internal.

Stress reacts very differently in people and there is therefore no standard system that can totally describe effects of stress. This is owed to the unique functions of the brains of individuals. This is the main reason why managing stress is so difficult. Firstly, when you are stressed you will have all kinds of symptoms and, when you visit a specialist, they have to rule out all possibilities to arrive at stress and stress diagnosis is not very easy. Some of the symptoms and signs of stress might be anger which seems to be directed at everyone, very low self esteem, irritation and impatience, confusion and so many others. Some of the physical signs include insomnia or lack of sleep, too much sleep, panic attacks, low energy and poor concentration, a nasty feeling in your stomach and so many others.
