Question by honalie: Cervical cancer and pregnancy with lots of pain?
I have had precancerous cell’s for almost 2 years (since march of 08) I have had 3 biopsy’s and numerous pap’s. They went from low-grade to high-grade throughout that time, but for the past 6 months have not gotten worse. I have been putting off the LEEP procedure that they keep pushing for, because I wanted to have another baby and didn’t want an incompetent cervix to complicate the pregnancy. I have a 2 year old now that was premature. Didn’t want to go through that again.

But about 2 months ago I started getting sharp inter mitten pains that have increased with time. before it was every time I cough or laugh, now it is all the time. I had an appointment to get another pap and biopsy in Jan (this month) So 2 months ago I made up my mind to finally just go in and get the procedure done. Having those pains made it all a lot more “real” and I felt I waited long enough for results to change, and that I would worry a lot less to just go ahead and do it.

But yesterday I took a pregnancy test and it’s positive. I’m pretty sure I’m pregnant again, but the pain is really worrying me and much worse then 2 months ago (when I wasn’t yet pregnant) I’m pretty sure I’m about 4 weeks pregnant. Called my doctor and they had me go in for blood work today to check HCG levels to see if I might be having a ectopic pregnancy. They were going to give me an ultrasound, but the doctor on call is too busy. I did not have this kind of pain this early with my first. I’m very worried that my cancer has progressed. They will not do a LEEP while I’m pregnant, and I’m not even sure they will give me a biopsy to determine if my cells have gotten worse, because a biopsy this early could cause miscarriage. It’s seems my options are limited. If it’s not a ectopic pregnancy I think I will have to wait until after the baby is born to get any treatment for the cancer and I’m not sure I can deal with the anxiety of that. I need to know if the cancer has progressed or not before I can decide if I want to risk carrying this baby. I feel stupid for waiting now, but I was very scared that I would have another preemie Now I’m double scared I’ll have a preemie and have to have a hysterectomy.

In all my research the past 2 days I have found only one person who has had a LEEP done while pregnant and ended up having a 2lb baby (which was the doctor’s mistake for not checking if she was pregnant). I’m totally freaking out!

Article by Bill Brainbert

In the past 9 years, I have had 3 normal pregnancies and healthy children. While the pregnancies were all normal and complication-free, I had all the different feelings going through both my mind and body. Between muscle and joint pain, there is also weight gain (in my case, this was quite substantial) causing physical discomfort. I never considered that there was any way of gaining some relief. I now know there is! It is a pregnancy massage. I recently discovered (maybe too late for me) that this is an option when pregnant, in most circumstances.

During pregnancy, we have normal feelings of stress, anxiety, even anxiety, as well as happiness and anticipation. Knowing there is a human being growing within us, we try extra hard to take care of ourselves, as well as the baby. However, some of these feelings can be relieved by a wonderful massage.

This can reduce so many negative symptoms of pregnancy, including stress, depression and anxiety. We just have to make sure that we have the appropriate pregnancy specialists, also known as pre-natal specialists. Proper positioning and special pillows are needed to support the growing baby during the massage. The specialist will know not to do any deep tissue massage.

Clothing is optional, some ladies prefer clothing (bra and underwear) others prefer towels or sheets for coverage. One important point is that the personal OB/GYN knows that you are considering pregnancy massage. These massages are good for when you are in labor, and are a great bonding experience for you and your husband. Massages when pregnant are not associated with miscarriages or any other complications. They are good for the mother and even after the baby is born, massages can often soothe a baby with colic.

Many mothers, myself included, are unaware of the fact that massages are possible, even helpful during pregnancy. I now know that massages can help eliminate waste products from the mother through the lymphatic and circulatory system, thus giving the mother more energy. Massages can also help with swollen ankles and legs, which any pregnant woman will tell you, are very uncomfortable. During my three pregnancies, I had the usual symptoms, ranging from sciatic nerve pain, stress on my spine, legs, even feet! The exhaustion I felt by the third pregnancy could have been reduced.

To have a massage while pregnant feels like it would be great. To know that my physical pain, stress and anxiety, as well as hormonal issues could have been alleviated by something so good for me is comforting. A calming, refreshing massage I will be seeking if blessed with another child I will be sure to look for a certified pregnancy massage therapist and consult my doctor. I will not go through another pregnancy without one!

These massages are good for when you are in labor, and are a great bonding experience for you and your husband. Massages when pregnant are not associated with miscarriages or any other complications. They are good for the mother and even after the baby is born, massages can often soothe a baby with colic.
When I think back to my own 3 pregnancies, if I had known about these massages, I would have made it a point to get some. My sciatic nerve caused me great pain with my first child. This was partially due to the immense weight gain I had. By my second pregnancy, I knew what to avoid in order to minimize weight gain, but I felt stress on my legs. As I got into my third pregnancy, I felt exhaustion, but didn’t consider massages. Now I know that massages can help eliminate waste products from the mother through the lymphatic and circulatory system, thus giving the mother more energy

While there are so many joys and so much eager anticipation, pregnancy is by no means a comfortable time. A massage is a luxury in everyday life, but when pregnant, it should be a necessity! To know that my physical pain, stress and anxiety could have been alleviated by something so good for me is comforting. A calming, refreshing massage can even help with hormonal changes during pregnancy. If I am further blessed with another child, a pregnancy massage is definitely something I will be seeking.

How great to be pregnant! It’s a time of joys and challenges. There are so many aches and pains, such discomfort. Though we are gaining weight, have muscle and joint pain, we are elated. What can we possibly do to alleviate this? I recently heard about pregnancy massage. What a luxury! During my pregnancies, I wish I had heard of this. In most circumstances, pregnancy massages can be a great relief and comfort.

All the normal feelings of stress and anxiety come to the forefront upon realization that there is now a new human being growing inside, and this child is a huge priority. There is joy and anticipation that goes along with these feelings. Often we can benefit from a pregnancy massage, just as we can benefit from a massage when not pregnant.

During a massage, clothing is optional, some ladies prefer clothing (bra and underwear) others prefer towels or sheets for coverage. One important point is that the personal OB/GYN knows that you are considering pregnancy massage. Massages when pregnant are not associated with miscarriages or any other complications. They are good for the mother during labor, and even after the baby is born, massages can often soothe a baby with colic. Massages can be a great bonding experience for you and your husband.

To be pregnant and have the luxury of a pregnancy massage seems glorious to me. To know that my physical pain, stress and anxiety could have been alleviated by something so good for me is comforting. A calming, refreshing massage can even help with hormonal changes during pregnancy. If I am further blessed with another child, a pregnancy massage is definitely something I will be seeking. Be sure to look for a certified pregnancy massage therapist and consult your doctor. At such a time in life when we are filled with both joy and a challenge, this is close to a necessity in my book.

When you are pregnant, your body does a number of things that can cause pain and discomfort, especially for your back. Hormones that are released can soften tissues while preparing you for childbirth, but the softening can lead to problems, since it makes it easier for everything to get out of balance. Chances are, you will be looking for some sort of effective back pain treatment. There are some good options available, like chiropractic care and acupuncture, but the option you may find most therapeutic and enjoyable is massage for back pain during pregnancy.

Pregnancy massage is different from normal massage techniques, in that areas that create special problems for pregnant women are focused on. Attention is paid to those joints and muscles that are most likely to be affected by all of the hormone changes in your body. A massage can provide some wonderful back pain treatment, while at the same time doing a lot to decrease stress and anxiety you may be feeling.

Massage for back pain during pregnancy can be used for several purposes. One thing it can accomplish is to reduce swelling in areas where fluids tend to collect. It can also gently work out tense and sore muscles. The key is to remember that big changes won’t happen overnight. You will probably experience several massage sessions before you notice a lasting difference. But then the difference should be substantial.

Between massage session, there are some other approaches to back pain treatment, so if you take good care of yourself by eating right and doing exercises to strengthen and stretch affected muscles, you’ll probably be surprised at how much more effective the next massage session will be.

Massage for back pain during pregnancy isn’t the only way massage can be applied in your situation. Massage can also be used to prepare your body and mind for the labor process. You might also consider having a massage therapist available during the labor itself. They can do a great deal to help you relax during the process, and keep you calm so your adrenaline production remains low. This is a factor in expediting labor. If you are relaxed, it is much more likely to go by quickly.

There are many ways to approach back pain treatment, but once you have experienced massage, you will probably find that it is one of your favorite ways to relax and have your back pain be minimized for at least a few hours. Ongoing treatments can help to reduce the incidences of back pain altogether. You will learn how to relax on your own and avoid behaviors that can cause pain.

Massage for back pain during pregnancy is becoming an increasingly popular way to deal not just with the pain, but the pregnancy and labor process as a whole. You might want to seriously consider finding a good massage therapist who can be with you for the entire process. You’ll feel much more comfortable and relaxed, and before you know if, your baby will be there.

Lower back pain is one of the largest complaints to Manchester Osteopaths and has reached epidemic proportions in the western world. Research shows that 60% of the UK’s population will suffer from it at some stage during their lives.

Back pain responds well to osteopathic treatment – reducing pain and restoring mobility and quality of life.

Lower back pain now affects two-thirds of the adult population of the UK; it is the

nation’s leading cause of disability.

Four out of five people will suffer back pain lasting more than a day at some point

in their lives.

Over £480 million a year is spent on services used by sufferers of back pain,

including 14 million GP consultations, seven million therapy sessions and

800,000 hospital beds.

Back pain is very common in children. Around 50% of children in Europe

experience back pain at some time.

Back problems and repetitive strain injuries cost British industry £5 billion each

year.

Doctors write 55 million prescriptions for painkillers each year.

The trouble with back pain is that it can do more than just give you a pain in the back. It

can create difficulties with walking, sitting, bending and lifting and can even lead to

depression and incontinence. It can also be the cause of pain in the buttocks, groin or legs (commonly called sciatica), in the head, neck, shoulders and arms. It can also be one of the effects of hip, knee and foot problems.

Back pain can result from bad posture, a sudden jerky movement, a lumpy mattress or poor lifting techniques. It can also be caused by injury in a work place, by a sports accident or by muscular spasms. It often occurs during pregnancy or, because of decreased flexibility, as people get older.

There are also many diseases and pathological conditions that can lead to back pain.

These include abdominal or pelvic disease, anxiety, arthritis, cervical or lumbar

spondylosis, dermatological problems, kidney disease, rheumatic conditions, tumours and scoliosis.

Our modern, sedentary lifestyles have a profound effect on the development of back pain; indeed one of the most effective ways of preventing it is simply to stay active.

An average adult in the UK spends at least two hours a day in front of a computer

screen or television set, and back problems can be triggered if they don’t sit properly.

In an age of mobile phones and computer games, such troubles are increasingly

inflicting children of school age as well.

Osteopathic treatment is often the most effective first line of attack in correcting

problems caused by back pain. Speedy access to our clinic Manchester Osteopaths for treatment in acute attacks often averts the possibility of conditions becoming chronic.

By correcting any underlying mechanical disturbances in the musculo-skeletal system, osteopaths can greatly relieve pain and distress, minimise dependency on drugs and slash the cost of treatment for side effects.

Osteopathic treatment often negates the need for further medical investigation or

surgery, although Manchester Osteopaths are skilled in diagnosing problems that require such investigation or treatment.

Back problems account for over 50% of the cases osteopaths see.

Osteopathy and the treatment of back pain

Back pain – causes and effects

The scourge of back pain

Back Pain – injury, treatment, relief an osteopathic approach

Depression and anxiety are a normal part of the experience of anyone who experiences chronic pain. But that’s just the beginning. There are so many other aspects of your life that start getting affected. It’s the terrible triangle of pain, lack of sleep, and sadness. Depression and irritability lead to fatigue and bone weariness. You are so sleepy all the time but you can’t get a good night’s sleep. You want to stop the pain and you want to get to sleep. All this trouble tends to lead to alcoholism, drug abuse, getting surgeries which are unnecessary, and family misery.

Your appetite may be gone or you may eat yourself silly with the pain and depression. It’s almost impossible for you to have any kind of social life because you have to be medicated to do much of anything. As a result, you are no longer a part of your former world. You are less active and perhaps you start to gain weight. You can’t exercise like you used to because it hurts too much. Then your clothes don’t fit. Your life cannot be planned because you don’t know when your pain will flare up into a situation where you can’t know if you will feel up to going somewhere. That’s when you start to feel that there’s nothingbetter to look forward to. You are tired, irritable, and isolated.

Anyone who has dealt with getting appropriate medications for pain has run into doctors who feel that you should never get the proper pain relief. Pain is the leading cost of medical care so it is a major problem. So how do doctors and regulatory government agencies deal with this? They say we should not have narcotic medicine to make us comfortable. There are so many people who need to be made comfortable but they are told they may only be comfortable a few hours per day. After all, you don’t want to become addicted to pain meds. So many of us end up doctor shopping or going to the emergency room.

Again, the feeling of isolation sets in. People who don’t know how the pain affects you, including members of your family, cannot really understand. You don’t want to have your pain as the main topic of conversation but you don’t want anyone dismiss your pain either. That’s why support groups are so important to people with chronic pain. You find that there are other people who have many of the same symptoms.

Don’t worry about going to such a group. You won’t be a ‘marked person’. They can give you support you can’t get anywhere else. People in the group can explain how they learned to cope and how they made it through the worst. This can help give you a few ideas. And you can finally let loose and tell other people how horrible you feel without knowing you might be driving them away.

If you have chronic pain and depression, here some benefits to joining a support group:

You are among people like you who have had the same bad experiences. You don’t feel like such an odd ball. When the people in the group talk, they will be saying things that you relate to. They will know what you are feeling and thinking and they won’t disapprove. You can let your hair hang down and spill your guts.

It’s a chance to meet new friends. They will listen and also get you to laugh some about what all you have been through. And you will have a network of people who can give you new information and share with you what didn’t work for them. Even if you are a shy person, I would encourage you to at least try one of these groups. They are in your community and on the internet. If you are too depressed to be around anyone, you are not getting the right medication. The group would be able to tell you that right away and give you encouragement.

With chronic pain and depression, you will need treatment based on how severe this deadly combination is for you. You will most likely get pain medication and antidepressants. The main thing for you to know is that if you have bad side effects, demand that your medication be changed. Insurance companies will pay for your medications in most cases. Often they will also pay for counseling as to how to handle your chronic illness such as diabetes. Don’t expect them to pay for much talk therapy.

Some people swear by chiropractic adjustments for spinal pain. Others say that acupuncture has helped them. The main thing for you to understand is that chronic pain can’t be cured most of the time. I about fell over when my doctor told me to forget finding a cure, that there was none. But you can get some relief from your pain and you definitely can get relief from your depression with the right medication. Do not give up. Insist that you get the best help there is to get. You deserve it.

Anyone who has suffered with chronic pain, the pain that becomes your life partner and then stabs you in the back, knows how easily it becomes to fall into a really bad depression. The pain that never quits leaves you wondering if living is as great at you thought it was. Depression just gets in line and follows the pain leader down that lonely road. Believe me, I’ve been on that road and it’s a mean, dead-end.

Pain is a normal. It’s a bad sensation triggered by your brain to let you know there is something wrong and you need to do something about it. Chronic pain is different. It stays with you and makes itself at home. Pain signals keep firing at you for weeks, months, and maybe years. This is caused by many illnesses such as arthritis, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel, spinal degeneration, and so many more. Pain is the not same for everyone. It can last for months or last a lifetime. It takes a toll, both physically and emotionally. It can lead to depression, anxiety, anger, insomnia, and irritability. Some chronic pain sufferers cannot work or even do the pleasurable things they used to do. It can cause problems in relationships. Everyone who is around the person with chronic pain suffers. It can lead to the over use of drugs and alcohol. Chronic pain is toxic and can ruin your life.

There may have been an accident which started if off, an auto accident perhaps with sprained back or neck injury. Most chronic pain sufferers tend to be in the older age group. You have chronic complaints such as low back pain, headaches, nerve pain, sciatic pain and many more. And the real kick in the head is that your doctors don’t really get that concerned about your pain. They worry about prescribing heavy medications which they have to explain about prescribing to government offices. So doctors tend to turn a blind eye and deaf ear your way.

There are many treatments around for chronic pain. There are pain medications, acupuncture, electric stimulation treatments, and even surgery. So often you keep getting referred off to yet another specialist who runs tests, shakes his head, and says there is just so much that can be done. Some must suffer – so they say.

Over 70 million people a year suffer with chronic pain and if you are a member of this group, you aren’t a happy camper. I have had a chronic pain problem for several years and I know the run around involved. Doctors want to turn away from this problem because there are no tests to prove your pain and no quick way to fix you up and make you happy. They look at you as a ‘chronic’ who can’t be satisfied with the relief you get.

You can get to the point where you look around and think that nobody understands what you are going through and doesn’t care anyway. This is a good breeding group for the depression soldiers to march right in and claim you. At one time I was prescribed so many medications from a doctor at a pain clinic that I couldn’t think straight. I wrote a check for $800 for an $80 bill. Then when I could not deal with being this disjointed, I went off them. Once again I promptly became surrounded by pain and became depressed. I was very frustrated that there seemed to be no real effort to get me on the right combinations of medications which would let me continue to function.

Believe me; I know that anyone experiencing chronic pain can come to feel totally alone in the suffering. Sooner or later you will run into someone who questions that you could have that much pain. Your quality of life is changed dramatically. I was always a very athletic person who loved to be physically active. When I had to slow down I resented it because I was giving up a very important part of my life.
