Hair loss can be embarrassing, and it can be alarming if it happens overnight. This condition is often known as alopecia areata, and commonly, some doctors will treat it as an autoimmune disease of the skin. This condition occurs when your body’s white blood cells launch a coordinated attack on your hair follicles, treating them as foreign bodies that have to be removed. This results in your hair falling out following the death of your hair follicles. What triggers this condition is unknown, but studies have shown that there may be several causes that directly or indirectly result in this condition.

Aside from the autoimmune disease itself, there may be a genetic connection: some members of your family can suffer from different allergies or autoimmune diseases, or may have eczema or asthma. These conditions can actually lead to overnight hair loss, and studies have shown that about half of all people who suffer from overnight hair loss also tend to suffer from these diseases. About a fifth of those who suffer from overnight hair loss may also have a fellow family member with the condition. Some babies might even be born with the condition, and this can be due to something that has happened to their mother while they were being carried in the womb.

An imbalance in the body’s hormones can also lead to autoimmune diseases, and it can indirectly lead to overnight hair loss. This may lead to the disease that causes the hair loss, or to direct hair loss itself. There are actually overlaps among the different autoimmune diseases, so it can be hard to pin down the cause of the disease to a certain hormone.

Overnight hair loss may actually occur as the result of another disease, or even as a symptom! About half of all women who give birth also experience hair loss and some women may even develop bald patches. This may be due to the fact that some hormones are imbalanced during pregnancy and can cause baldness. Another way for overnight hair loss to occur is through disorders of the thyroid gland, where the thyroid gland’s overproduction or underproduction of some hormones can also cause other hormones in the body to be imbalanced. In this case, both men and women are affected by the imbalance.

There are some conditions that co-occur with overnight hair loss. This may include an overproduction of Langerhans cells in the body. Stress also contributes to a lot of disorders, and one of them is alopecia areata. This may be due to the fact that stress can cause the narrow capillaries that supply blood to different parts of the body to constrict and close. Chemical imbalances such as those associated with lack of vitamins and minerals can also cause your body to lose hair. Lastly, you may also be undergoing an infection due to a viral or bacterial, even a fungal agent, and you may experience overnight hair loss as a result.

These are only a few causes of overnight hair loss. Although this condition can be quite disconcerting, to say the least, you should not panic. Instead, you need to go see your doctor and ask for advice on how you can have your condition treated. Moreover, you need to ask for help on how you can get your hair to start growing again. You don’t have to worry as long as you don’t self-medicate and as long as you keep your cool.

Well you can now stop worrying about all those extra pounds that you will put on during pregnancy. New generation moms can easily get back their pre-pregnancy figure within a year.. With the right daily regime, workouts and a good diet; now getting pregnant does not mean getting fat.

However the right diet does not mean that you start dieting right after you deliver. Whether or not you are breast feeding, the first few months you should concentrate on nourishing yourself through a proper diet. You can start exercising along with a good diet intake. After a couple of months, your body returns to its normal level and then you can start your loosing weight. You can take weight loss tips from new moms who have lost weight after pregnancy.

How Many Months Before I Return To My Normal Weight?

Weight gain during nine months is in the normal limits (20 – 30 pounds) then you should be able to lose weight in less than a year. This process takes time but ensures that your weight loss is at the right pace and safe. Post pregnancy period usually leaves the new moms low on self esteem. Some would be still coping with massive weight gain; some would constantly worry about milk stains on their clothes. Many women might not get enough time to take even a proper bath. Women do tend to get depressed for these reasons and do not know how cope with the change in their life. Many women constantly worry about sex after long nine months. They do not feel very comfortable indulging in intercourse as their body is out of shape.

These problems can be easily dealt with if you work towards your goal with a healthy weight loss regime. Pregnancy weight loss should be planned in consultation with your doctor. You should also keep in mind your physical condition before making a diet or exercise plan.

Exercising Helps

As a balanced diet plays a vital role in weight loss, exercise also plays a major part. Exercising however should not be started without the doctor’s consultation.

Exercise helps in post pregnancy weight loss. It also helps to increase your self confidence and lends you a hand if you are dealing with depression. Exercising affects breast milk is a myth and you should not bother about it.

Weight Loss Through Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding also helps moms’ lose weight. Breast feeding releases hormones which help your body to return to its normal level which in turn helps you regain your normal weight.
Breastfeeding is not a fool-proof method of weight loss after pregnancy. In most cases, women start losing weight only after they stop breast feeding.
Also relying on breast feeding may make you careless towards your diet and workout routine.
You can go on a low fat diet even if you are breast-feeding. Do ensure that you are taking at least 1800-2000 calories per day.

Remember that your body has gone through a lot of strain and changes. Post pregnancy care is very important for your body to heal and also to ensure weight loss after pregnancy.

Isn’t it paradoxical that inspite of the fact that most of us enter the world as bald as a coot, and sometimes even exit that way, we spend our lifetime trying to maintain our hair through thick and thin. All of us lose between 40 and 120 strands of hair a day, depending on the amount of hair one has and its growth cycle.

Hair growth is not a continuous process. Hair follicles have a growth phase (anagen) and a resting, non-growth phase (telogen). Depending on how we treat our hair there will invariably be a variation in the amount of hair loss too. The lost hair is often so quickly replaced that we almost never notice its departure. But If you start to notice an alarming amount of hair on the bathroom sink or on your brush, if your pillow is covered with scads of loose hair, if your part seems to be getting wider or you’re seeing more scalp, you’ve probably got a problem and its time to take some action before you are fated to join the million men and women suffering from hair thinning or pattern hair loss. Hair loss and thinning can lead to anxiety, depression, and lack of confidence and fear too.

Why on earth did it happen to me?

Hair loss begins when a certain enzyme converts the hormone testosterone into another hormone called DiHydrotestosterone (DHT). Androgenetic Alopecia, or hereditary hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss. Roughly put, the more Androgens or the hormones that affect hair loss you have the faster you will lose hair. Men generally lose their hair in a horse-shoe shaped pattern; i.e. they lose hair at the top of their head. Women on the other hand very rarely ‘go bald’. Here hair thinning takes place with the part getting wider and the hair receding from the frontal area behind the frontal hairline. Telogen effluvium or hair loss due to emotional stress is another major cause for hair loss. What happens here is that hair goes through a synchronized shift from the anagen phase to telogen, the resting phase? This occurs after severe physiologic stress, such as any major surgery, pregnancy, death, divorce, loss of job etc. Usually once the period of stress is over hair growth slowly returns to normal.

Other factors for hair loss include use of birth control pills (relating to the amount of the progestin hormone in the pill), or a reaction to certain medications or even some supplements. Hair loss is also a known reaction to chemotherapy drugs. Thyroid, syphilis and other illnesses will also lead your hair to fall out. Improper care too plays a role in hair loss. Pulling the hair by wearing a very tight pony tail, cosmetic changes like colouring the hair, rebonding too much blow drying , over zealously brushing your hair , can all cause hair to be pulled out prematurely.

Another important factor is diet. Improper diet, iron deficiency, dyes used incorrectly, losing too much weight too soon and menopause can also cause your hair to thin out.

So what can one do to slow down or reverse hair loss?

History tells us of how the Greek physician Hippocrates tried to alleviate his patients’ baldness with pigeon droppings. Aristotle tried goat’s urine to remedy his own baldness. Cleopatra prepared pastes for Julius Caesar made of ground horse teeth, deer marrow and charred mice mixed with bear grease. Its unlikely that any of these remedies bore fruit but the effort in that direction continues. One should however not lose hope as today, more than ever, there are many ways to slow down and even treat hair loss to a large degree.

First check if you are missing out on any of the following:

· Adequate intake of vitamins.

· Balanced diet rich in iron and protein.

· Intake of raw vegetables, fresh fruits, salads, green leafy vegetables regularly.

· Washing hair twice weekly with a light shampoo.

· Reduce anxiety, stress and sleeplessness.

· Check for infections of scalp.

If hair fall persists meet a dermatologist or a physician who deals with hair loss and ascertain the reason for the hair fall. No absolute cure for hair loss has been found so far, yet not all varieties of hair loss are untreatable. Drugs known to slow the onset of common baldness, minoxidil (Rogaine) and finasteride (Propecia) are available with prescription. These have gained wide popularity but few of its side effects are still coming to light.

Other Options

Surgical treatments are becoming quite popular as they give a very ‘natural’ look. Hair is transplanted from the back of the scalp from where it grows. This is a very expensive treatment and the can be quite invasive. Experts agree that a diet rich in whole foods and irons help promote hair growth. The food we eat shows in the quality of blood, and, therefore, the hair. For men, it has been suggested that a low fat diet may help decelerate the balding process. For women, hair loss could be a sign of a gastrointestinal problem, which needs to be checked. Lack of protein, or an excess or Vitamin A are a often stated cause of hair loss.

According to Chinese Medicine, hair loss is related to a kidney deficiency. The ancient texts caution that too much sweet or salt could cause hair to fall out. Natural remedies such as Aromatherapy, and natural supplements and herbs such as Saw palmetto oil, Folic acid,Silica biotin, and vitamin B5 are also said to help rejuvenate and maintain thickness of the hair. Ayurveda believes in a holistic approach to alleviate hair loss issues. It is based on the use of plant oils, herbs, as well as meditation, diet, exercise and massage to balance a person’s three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) that make up one’s “Prakruti” (mind-body type). According to this ancient science, oils such as brahmi and Bhrigaraj oil reduce Pitta dosha in the hair follicles thereby stimulating hair growth. Mixing either of these oils with some coconut oil and leaving it overnight is a popular solution.

Everyone’s hair loss is different, and with constant care and attention one can reduce hair loss and have a head full of beautiful tresses.

Nothing can be more devastating for a woman than to realize that her hair is coming out far more extensively and rapidly than is normal. (Normal is 100-150 strands a day). Each hair grows for a period of 2-6 years, goes through a short dormant period and then falls out as the follicle pushes through a new hair. When new hairs do not replace the old or when hair is coming out in clumps or sections, there is definite cause for concern.

Female hair loss comes from a variety of causes – some temporary, some permanent. Temporary causes include pregnancy, anxiety and stress, too many strong treatments (coloring, bleaching), too much manipulation, illness, disease, and infections of the scalp. Fortunately, regrowth occurs naturally when as these causes dissipate. Permanent hair loss occurs as a result of heredity and hormonal changes and unfortunately is not reversed naturally. Women usually see hair loss begin at areas of parts, where parts become wider. Female pattern baldness occurs primarily in the frontal areas; then, there is general overall hair loss, resulting in a continual thinning of the entire head with the scalp becoming more and more visible.

Treatments for female hair loss include a number of things:

1. Diet plays some role in hair loss, so it is important to commit to a healthy well-balanced diet at all times.

2. Exercise increases blood circulation to all areas of the body, the scalp included. Some studies have shown that increased blood circulation to the scalp can assist in the stimulation of follicles to begin to produce hair again.

3. There are a number of natural herbal and oil remedies, most of which are topical, that is, they involve applying solutions directly onto the scalp with the effect of opening up closed follicles and enhancing the chance of hair production. These have varying degrees of success, dependent upon the individual.

4. Wigs and hair extensions can provide non-permanent relief for sufferers and, fortunately, these are considered acceptable fashion accessories today.

5. A number of medical products have also been developed specifically for females. It is important to state here that women must be certain that products they use are specifically designed for them. Male hair products often have ingredients which can be harmful to women, particularly those of child-bearing age. Medical products are available through prescription and over-the-counter. It would be wise to consult with a physician first, before using any of these, to be certain that they are not contra-indicated with any other medication currently being used and to be certain that the hair loss is not the result of some other medical condition. Provillus has products designed specifically for women, and is FDA approved. Research studies on the effectiveness of these and other products, in terms of both reducing loss and promoting regrowth, is readily available on the Internet, through a “Google” search.

6. There are also a number of surgical procedures available for women, including transplants and grafts. These are expensive and should be explored carefully before committing to the cost. The distress over hair loss is an individual matter. If yours bothers you on a daily basis and you are beginning to avoid normal social activities due to embarrassment, you owe it to yourself to take action. Life is to be enjoyed!

Our hair has a growing period of 2 to 6 years, and then has a short dormant period before it then falls out as the follicle then push a new hair through. If there are no new hairs to replace the old ones or if the hair starts coming out in clumps or wads, then we definitely have a problem.

The good news is hair regrowth in most cases will take place naturally when this problems are resolved.

Permanent hair loss on the other hand takes place because of hormonal changes and heredity and sadly can not be reversed naturally. A lot of females will start seeing hair loss where they part their hair, the parts will become wider. Female pattern baldness will normally begin in the frontal areas of the scalp, then start spreading to all of the scalp, with the end result being a continual thinning of the entire scalp and becoming more noticeable and more visible.

There are a number of treatments that can be used for female hair loss:

1. Diet can play a small role in hair loss and other health issues, changing to healthy well-balanced diet is a good idea.

2. There have been some studies done that show increasing blood circulation to the scalp has help to reactivate the follicles into producing hair again so consider starting an exercise program, not only will it help your hair but is great for your whole body.

 3. Depending on the individual some of the oil remedies and natural herbal treatments have had some success, these are referred to as topical and require putting the product on the scalp to aid in opening the closed follicles, which in turn for some will increase the chance of producing more hair.

4. Another alternative are wigs and hair extensions these will give a non-permanent relief for sufferers and, are look at as acceptable fashion accessories.

5. There our a number of products that have been developed just for women. It should be noted that women should be sure that the products they use are specifically created for them. Many of the male hair products have ingredients which may prove harmful to women, especially women of child-bearing age. These types of products are available over-the-counter and as prescription. You should always check with your doctor, before you start using any of these type products, to insure that they do not cause a problem with any other medication you maybe be taking, and to verify that your hair loss is not caused by any other medical condition.

6. Transplants and grafts are also procedures you can look into, but keep in mind these can prove to be very costly. If you hair loss is causing you stress and really bothers you on a day to day basis and you find yourself avoiding normal social activities because you feel embarrassed, Take action now, remember life is meant to be enjoyed!
