Postnatal depression is estimated to affect 1 in 5 women and is found in all cultural, social and age groups. There are different types of this condition experienced by mothers after birth. There is the ‘Baby Blues’ which usually occurs between the 3rd and 5th day and usually resolve by the 10th day. It is thought to be the response to hormone changes and the stress of giving birth and occurs in up to 70% of women.
Postnatal depression has a gradual onset between the 3rd and 9th month. Postpartum Psychosis occurs in approximately 1 in 500 births and is quite rare. It seems to be genetically linked and typically occurs after the first baby. It presents as a manic depressive illness and requires urgent psychiatric treatment. Read the rest of this entry

I have been experiencing what I believe is hot flushes since a few days before Christmas. My face, neck, and chest feel like they are on fire on a daily basis and the skin turns a slight shade of pink. The rest of my body feels cold and I have the chills. I feel a wave of nervous energy and tiredness at the same time…it’s hard to describe. However there is no sweating whatsoever. It usually is accompanied by a headache and after a couple of hours it goes away. It seems to always start in the afternoons. At first I thought I was having an allergic reaction to something I was eating, but after it persisted for more than a couple of days I knew it wasn’t that. Now I believe it is hormonal. To give you a little bit of my medical history:
I am 26 years old, 5’4 and 130 lbs. I have had PCOS now for 9 years. I used to be on birth control pills as treatment for the PCOS but I stopped taking them about a year ago. I have not had a period since until now. I have been spotting for a few weeks now and I think it might have something to do with the hot flushes. It’s still weird to me that I have never experienced these episodes before now. It is making me miserable.

Anyone who has suffered with chronic pain, the pain that becomes your life partner and then stabs you in the back, knows how easily it becomes to fall into a really bad depression. The pain that never quits leaves you wondering if living is as great at you thought it was. Depression just gets in line and follows the pain leader down that lonely road. Believe me, I’ve been on that road and it’s a mean, dead-end.
Pain is a normal. It’s a bad sensation triggered by your brain to let you know there is something wrong and you need to do something about it. Chronic pain is different. It stays with you and makes itself at home. Pain signals keep firing at you for weeks, months, and maybe years. This is caused by many illnesses such as arthritis, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel, spinal degeneration, and so many more. Pain is the not same for everyone. It can last for months or last a lifetime. It takes a toll, both physically and emotionally. It can lead to depression, anxiety, anger, insomnia, and irritability. Some chronic pain sufferers cannot work or even do the pleasurable things they used to do. It can cause problems in relationships. Everyone who is around the person with chronic pain suffers. It can lead to the over use of drugs and alcohol. Chronic pain is toxic and can ruin your life.

With the swine flu now holding the potential for a worldwide pandemic, there is perhaps no one more worried about getting sick than women who are pregnant.
This is particularly true for those of you over 35 who may already be struggling with fertility issues – or maybe undergoing fertility treatments right now.
The good news is that pregnancy doesn’t necessarily increase your risk for getting the swine flu – or any other type of flu. However, it is important to note that if you do get the flu while you are pregnant, studies show you are up to five times more likely to suffer serious complications – such as pneumonia. And that is often where most of the flu fatalities lie.

One week ago from today my boyfriend and I had sex. Although we didn’t use protection, he did not ejaculate anywhere near my vagina although there may have been contact with the pre-ejaculation substance for like, 10-20 seconds (on the outside, there was no penetration at all.) For the past week I have had sore breasts, stomach/lower abdominal cramps and headaches. My breasts don’t usually hurt before my period comes. And other than that I just have this intuitive feeling that I KNOW I’m pregnant.
I am due for my period on the 26th or 27th. I know I can take a HPT but they are REALLY expensive so I’m trying to avoid that. I can also wait to see if I miss my period but I’m going crazy with anxiety worrying about being pregnant. I can’t sleep at nights and it bothers me constantly. I’ve heard that a lot of girls think their period is coming when it turns out they’re actually pregnant.
